Orthodontic Emergency Care & Repair

During the course of orthodontic treatment, situations may occur that cause discomfort with your braces, Invisalign®, or other orthodontic appliances. It is common for teeth to be very tender for about a week after the initial placement of the orthodontic appliances and also after each adjustment. Other orthodontic inconveniences and repairs may require a call or visit to the office, and we are always available to serve you and answer questions concerning your treatment.

Repair or Emergency?

Many times orthodontic repairs can be handled at your next regular appointment, while others may require an office appointment or even emergency treatment.

Orthodontic Repairs

If you experience any of the following situations, please call our office during regular business hours to determine if a repair appointment is needed or if the issue can be handled at your next scheduled visit:

  • Loose bands or brackets
  • Broken arch wire
  • Elastic ligatures/bands
  • Broken or lost appliances
  • Poking wires

Until your appointment, the following at-home solutions can help:

Loose Bands or Brackets
If you have a loose band or bracket, try to remove the loose piece with slight finger pressure. You may have to remove the tie wire or elastic ligatures first, which can be done using a fingernail clipper. Brush well around the area and save your band or bracket to bring to your next appointment.

Broken Arch Wires
For broken arch wires, simply cover the loose ends with orthodontic wax. If you are out of wax, it is also available at most pharmacies such as Walgreens or CVS. In a pinch, a piece of sugar-free chewing gum can be a temporary aid in place of wax.

Broken or Lost Appliances
If you have a broken appliance or retainer, stop wearing it and call our office to schedule a repair appointment. If your appliance is only cracked but not broken, you can continue to wear it.

If you experience an orthodontic emergency during our normal business hours, please call our office. In the case of an emergency after-hours, call our office at (715) 421-5255 or email office@olearyortho.net and an Orthodontic Assistant will contact you as soon as possible.
