Orthodontics for Kids
Dr. O'Leary suggests that it is best for children to be seen as early as age 7 to advise if orthodontic treatment is needed or will likely be necessary in the future. The first permanent molars and incisors have usually come in by that time and cross bites, crowding, and other problems can be evaluated. When treatment is begun early, Dr. O'Leary can guide the growth of the jaw and incoming permanent teeth. Early treatment can also regulate the width of the upper and lower dental arches, gain space for permanent teeth, reduce likelihood of impacted permanent teeth, correct thumb-sucking, and eliminate abnormal swallowing or speech problems. In other words, early treatment can simplify later treatment.
Orthodontics for Teens
Most orthodontic treatment occurs during the teenage years when all permanent teeth have fully erupted. This is usually the most efficient time to accomplish orthodontic treatment since there is no need to wait for additional primary teeth to be lost and permanent teeth to develop.
The SureSmile® technology is most effective when all permanent teeth are available and therefore this along with an adolescent growth spurt can provide for a very efficient treatment time. At this age many teens are also becoming more concerned with the appearance of their smile, which can be a great motivating factor for patient cooperation.
